Best Pies in the Midwest - recommended by Midwesterners

Do you love pie? Are you heading to the Midwest? The #MidwestMondayChat on twitter comes through again —this time, with great pie recommendations from all around the Midwest!

We looked over all the tweets, from travelers, bakers, and general pie eaters, and chose our favorite pie from each of the 12 Midwestern states. Check out our top choices for the best pies in the Midwest!

Illinois

Royal Oak Farm Orchard, Harvard, IL

Four generations have run this family orchard and farm in northern Illinois since 1992. Their restaurant serves both savory pot pies and an award-winning apple caramel pie!

Tip: as an orchard farm, Royal Oak is seasonal. But Illinois has plenty of other great pie options, like The Chopping Bloc in Chicago.


Indiana

Oasis Diner, Plainfield, IN

Saved from a near-destruction by its designation as one of Indiana’s 10 Most Endangered Buildings, the Oasis Diner has been operating in Plainfield, Indiana almost continuously since 1954.

The Oasis offers a dozen varieties of locally made pies, and is part of the Indiana Foodways’ Pie Trail. 


Iowa

Kansas

Sommerset Hall Café, Dover, KS

The quaint cafe, known in the region for its friendly service and great food, garnered national attention in 2008, when Norma Grubb, the cafe’s pie-maker, won a Good Morning America contest, “Best Pie in America.” Norma later retired from pie-making at the age of 89, after achieving the lifetime goal of making more than 10,000 pies! 


Michigan

The Cherry Hut, Beulah, MI

A northern Michigan tradition since 1922, when The Cherry Hut was first established as a simple roadside pie stand. The smiling face of “Cherry Jerry” was cut into the crust of their first pies, and to this day it is the distinguishing sign of the Cherry Hut and its products.


Minnesota

Betty’s Pies, Two Harbors, MN

It all began in 1957, when Betty's father, Aleck, built a fish shack by the Stewart River. Betty thought it would be a good idea to have some goodies for the fishermen when they stopped in, so she started making coffee, donuts and pie for them to enjoy.

Missouri

The Blue Owl Restaurant, Kimmswick, MO

Home of the famous Levee High Apple Pie! The pie was named to honor volunteers who built a levee that saved the restaurant from The Great Flood of 1993. The Blue Owl has been featured on The Food Network, The Travel Channel, The Today Show and O Magazine.

Known more for their fresh, local beer and Ohio Beer School events, The Rail still makes our list, if just for their sole pie: the scratch-made Bourbon pecan pie! Also serving from-scratch chocolate pecan and pumpkin pies.


South dakota
